Preparing Your GRLLR Outdoor Kitchen for Winter

    Ember Cover 18 inch

Most damage to an outdoor kitchen does not happen during the cooking season. It happens over the quiet months when nobody is looking at it: a wet autumn, a hard frost, weeks of standing water nobody noticed. A bit of preparation in October takes an outdoor kitchen through a UK winter properly and means less work bringing it back in spring.

Cover everything, matched to the model

Start with covers. GRLLR sells a fitted cover for every Ember kamado size, 16 inch, 18 inch and 22 inch and Pro, and for every Prime gas barbecue model, G3S, G4S, G5S and G4 Build In. A loose or wrong-fit cover does more harm than no cover at all, it traps moisture against the appliance instead of shedding it, so check you have the exact model before winter sets in.

For Connect kitchens, a side unit cover plate protects the joins between units, the point most likely to let water sit where it should not over a long, wet spell.

    Kamado-specific winter care

A kamado’s ceramic shell handles UK winters well, but the metal fittings and gaskets are the parts that suffer if left exposed. Check the felt gasket around the lid before the cold sets in: a worn gasket lets moisture into the firebox as well as heat out during cooking, and cold, wet weather is exactly when a compromised seal shows up as a grill that will not hold temperature. Clean out ash fully before covering for any extended period; damp ash left in the base attracts moisture and speeds up corrosion on the metal components.

    Emptying and protecting Connect units

A Sink Unit left with standing water in freezing conditions risks cracked pipework, drain the line before the first hard frost rather than after. A Cooling Unit housing a fridge should be checked against the manufacturer’s own guidance on running through winter; not every outdoor fridge is rated to operate below a certain ambient temperature.

Worktops benefit from a clear-down before winter proper: leaf debris and standing water sitting against a join or a door seam for weeks does more damage than the same surface exposed to open rain, which at least drains.

    What not to bother with

Properly specified outdoor cabinetry, 304 stainless steel worktops and cabinetry built for outdoor use rather than adapted from indoor kitchens, does not need dismantling or moving indoors for winter. That is the point of buying units built for the British climate in the first place. Covers, a clean-down, and attention to anything that holds standing water are the real work; anything beyond that is usually more effort than the units actually need.

Come spring, an outdoor kitchen prepared this way needs little more than uncovering and a wipe down before the season starts again, rather than an inspection for damage that proper preparation would have prevented.
